HAKATA AREA

Hakata Riverain, Hakataza and Fukuoka Asian Art Museum
A multi-complex facility equipped with all the urban functions such as a theater, shopping center, a hotel and a museum. The "Fukuoka Asian Art Museum" is a new type of museum that holds exhibitions of modern/contemporary art of Asia and pursues exchanges between citizens and artists. At "Hakataza" theater, one can enjoy a variety of performing arts such as Kabukis and musicals. Programs change every month.

Fukuoka Asian Art Museum

This museum, located in the Hakata Riverain area, is the first museum in the world that has both modern and contemporary arts of Asia as its theme. The collection covers a wide range of high-quality works. The museum is very active in increasing exchanges with Asian artists in holding the contemporary Asian art exhibition "Fukuoka Triennale" every three years.

Hakataza Theater

Hakata used to be the center of show business, birthplace of such world-class actors such as Otojiro Kawakami. The Hakataza Theater was opened to revitalize this industry. Equipped with a revolving stage, a flower way (an elevated passage way running from the stage to the rear of the theater) and orchestra box. this is a full-scale theater for dramatic plays, presenting a variety of performances such as Kabuki and musicals every month.

Canal City Hakata

This futuristic, three-dimensional city-within-a-city is a bold new design that is the first of its kind in Japan. The facility hosts a variety of attractions including the famous Grand Hyatt Fukuoka Hotel; the Fukuoka City Theater, which is the first permanent theater for Gekidan Shiki theater troupe; AMC Canal City 13, with 13 full-scale movie theaters; and Fukuoka Joypolis, a futuristic amusement theme park. Drop by for a day of excitement and see for yourself.

Fukuoka City Theater

Built exclusively for the Shiki Theatrical Company in Canal
City Hakata. In addition to the theater fans of Fukuoka, it attracts drama lovers from throughout Kyushu.

Kawabata Shopping street

A traditional arcade reborn and a short walk east from Nakasu, Kawabata is the oldest shopping mall in Hakata. This covered arcade is lined with many traditional stores, giving it a
unique atmosphere. You can find Kawabata Zenzai here (only on Saturday and Sunday). The Kushida Shrine, famous for the Yamakasa Festival, is located at one end of the arcade.

Sumiyoshi shrine

The shrine is considered to be the origin of Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrines throughout the country. The main inner shrine that exists today was rebuilt by Nagamasa Kuroda in 1623. It is a traditional Shinto architecture different from Buddhist architecture as seen in its straight-lined roof. It is designated an Important Cultural Property

Rakusuien Park

Rakusuien is a villa built by a Hakata merchant during the Meiji Era (1868-1912). This park, famous for its greenery, is surrounded by a typical Hakata-style wall. Visitors can enjoy the landscaped, circular Japanese garden, tea room, and the open air tea ceremony held in the park.

Hakata Machiya Folk Museum

This exhibition museum is a replica of a town in Hakata during the Meiji and Taisho periods (1868-1926). Visitors can experience the lifestyle and festivals of the time and learn about traditional folk crafts.

Shofukuji Temple

This was the first Zen temple in Japan and was built by the founder of the Japanese Zen sect, Eisai, in 1195. Near the temple, there are other old, traditional temples such as Jotenji and Tochoji. There are also the remains of old houses and paths here which, along with the temples and shrines, create a serene atmosphere.

Tochoji Temple

In 806, after training in China, Kobodaishi built this temple to offer fervent prayers for the long life of esoteric Buddhism in the East. The temple hosts wooden statues of Kan-non, the god of Mercy with 1000 hands, and the largest wooden statue of Buddha (a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property). Visitors come daily.

Kushida Shrine

Kushida shrine, the general tutelary shrine in Hakata, was built for the common people during the Heian Period. The huge ginkgo tree in the shrine grounds is Kushida shrine's symbol. The shrine is the starting point of the Oiyama race held on the last day of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, one of the summers biggest events. Don't miss the kazariyama (decorated floats) and the Hakata Historical Museum within the shrine.

Zendo-ji temple

According to historical accounts. Saint chinzei shoko erected this temple in 1212 with its principal image dedicated to saint zendo. According to the second series of the supplementary volume of the "chikuzen province topography" (fukuoka prefecture topography) however, it said that saint koyo erected this temple in 1477 after restoring the zendoji temple ix chikugo (Fukuoka prefecture). Zendoji temple became emperor gotsuchimikado's place of worship during ms reign. The statues of saint zendo, saint chinzei, a bell and a mongolian anchor which exist at this temple are designated cultural assets by the prefecture.

Manshiro shrine

Ito kozaemon, a wealthy merchant from hakata made a fortune in foreign trade during the early edo era. He,however, was executed together with his family because of his trade with foreign countries which went against the national policy of isolation. it is said that manshiro shrine was erected at the site where his' family resided in order to propitiate their souls. This shrine is believed to be devoted to the god of thriving business, health for children and longevity.

Ryugu-ji temple

In1222, a mermaid was caught, a sign which was taken to mean the eternity of our nation' and thus was buried in the compound of ukinido temple. It was thought that the mermaid came from ryugu (sea god's palace) and hence the temple was renamed the ryugu temple. In 1480, priest sogi who was a noted verse linking poet stayed here and held a hakata verse-linking meeting where they linked verses composed of 100 phrases. he is also the author of the "chikushi travel sketch" describing his tour of kyushu.

Mangyou-ji temple

This temple was erected in 1529 by shichiri hayato under the order of saint rennyo. It has been said, that shichiri gohjun who was the chief priest of this temple during the meiji restoration was an eminent priest in the shin sect of buddhism. The grave op a nun, meigetsu also exists here. According to legend, she was an unfortunate prostitute but so deeply religious that a lotus flower bloomed on her grave on the seventh day after her death.

Torin-ji temple

This temple was constructed in 1696 by tachibana jitsuzan, a senior statesman of kuroda mitsuyuki. The third feudal lord of the kuroda clan. Jitsuzan was a person of profound learning and great ability, excellent in composing poems gifted with literary ability and an expert in tea ceremony. He discovered the books "nanboroku" which teach the tea ceremony doctrines of rikyu, written by nanbo sokei one of rikyu's leading pupils. Jitsuzan made an intense study of the doctrines and later established the nanbo school of tea ceremony his grave can be seen within the compound.

Houkoku shrine(The site of Kamiya sotan's residents)

Sotan made a fortune by trading with foreign countries and is known as one of the three wealthy merchants of hakata together with shimai soshitsu and ohga sohaku. When Toyotomi hideyoshi was in hakozaki trying to restore peace in kyushu, sotan together with shimai soshitsu, a wealthy merchant and others petitioned to be allowed to restore hakata and later dedicated themselves to its restoration. Sotan built a shrine within his premises and performed memorial rites in honor of hideyoshi to compensate for his indebtedness, which is now called the hokoku shrine.

Bayside Place Hakata Futoh

This exciting spot is located only 15 minutes from Tenjin. Located next to Marine Messe Fukuoka and the Fukuoka Kokusai Center, this complex is the terminal for ferries to Iki,Tsushima, Shikanoshima and other islands. In addition to the passenger terminal, it has a multi-purpose hall, restaurants, shops and a huge columnar aquarium with a variety of colorful fish.
"Snow Board Slope," the first powder snow slope in Japan, attracts snow board fans all through the year.

Fukuoka Kokusai Center

This facility was established for the purpose of promoting friendship and exchange with other countries while promoting trade. A huge hall with a capacity of 10,000 people, it is used for holding exhibitions, events, and gatherings. In particular, the Kyushu Sumo Tournament is held here every November.

Marine Messe Fukuoka

Marine Messe Fukuoka has established itself as the core facility of an area rich with convention facilities. It is one of the largest convention centers in Japan, with an arena and halls, and has already handled a number of large-scale international events.

TENJIN AREA

Tenjin Underground Shopping Arcade

The cobblestone walks leading to the Tenjin Subway Station add a quaint atmosphere to this underground arcade. Shops in the arcade bring the fashions of Tokyo, Paris, and New York to Fukuoka. The mall is also connected to about 20 nearby buildings and shopping areas, allowing shoppers to avoid bad weather. Hakata Station is also only a mere five minutes away by subway.

Former Prefectural Hall and Official Guest House

This western-style building located in Tenjin's Chuo Park, is a two-story house built in 1910 of wood and mortar. It was designated as a Nationally Important Cultural Property. It is one of the few French Renaissance-style public buildings constructed during the Meiji Period (1868-1912).

The Akarenga Cultural Center

This building, a Nationally Designated Historical Building, was built in 1909 by Kingo Tatsuno (who designed Tokyo Station) and Yasushi Kataoka-two representative Meiji Era Japanese architects. The first floor has an exhibition room, coffee shop, and lounge, while the second floor has a training room and a convention room which can also be used for concerts. Admission to the first floor is free.

ACROS Fukuoka

Acros Fukuoka is an information center for international cultural exchanges, equipped with various facilities such as concert halls, restaurants, shops and offices. The beautiful step garden, facing the Tenjin Central Park, is truly unique and impressive.

Yanagibashi Market

Fukuoka is known for its many gourmet residents. Full of fresh marine products on the shelves and dashing Hakata dialect in the air, the Yanagibashi Market is the kitchen of Hakata, a gourmet city.

Yatai

About 200 yatais-open air food stalls-operate in Fukuoka, mainly in the Nakasu and Tenjin area. They serve a variety of unique meals including ramen, yakiniku, horumon, tempura, and even pizza.


OTHER AREA

Fukuoka Castle Ruins

The feudal lord of Chikuzen, Nagamasa Kuroda, spent seven years constructing this castle. There was no main tower, but it was still a great castle composed of 47 turrets of various sizes. Currently, only the Otemon gate, Tamon turret, and a few other areas remain. The ruins are popular with tourists and locals alike.

Korokan Historical Museum

Traces of the Korokan, an official guest house from the Heian period, were found while the outfield stands of Heiwadai Baseball Stadium were being repaired in late 1987. Along with a reproduction of the "Shukubo" lodging of the time, it also features exhibitions of Chinese porcelain and West Asian glass products of the 7th to 11th centuries, revealing the role Fukuoka played as a base for international exchange centuries ago.

Ohori park

In addition to the many joggers working out around the two kilometer path that rings the lake, the park is an excellent place for bird watchers due to its many trees and rare birds. It is close to the center of the city and is complemented by a Japanese style garden and the Fukuoka City Art Museum which lie within its boundaries.

Fukuoka Art Museum

The museum is located in the southeastern part of Ohori Park and hosts a variety of art exhibits. The museum owns many important works of art, including works by Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol, local artists Shigeru Aoki and Hanjiro Sakamoto, as well as an impressive collection of Asian contemporary artists.

Japanese garden

This garden, basically designed to express Japanese classical beauty with traditional garden landscaping, affords to all the joy of strolling amidst artificial garden hills, woods and ponds. Winding streams, a garden of KARESANSUI dry landscape, a SUKIYA-style teahouse and a dewy path garden are beautifully arranged in the master water garden where one will be enticed to wonder through the garden paths.

Fukuoka dome

This professional baseball team answers the enthusiastic expectations of the residents of Fukuoka. Their home field is Fukuoka Dome, the largest domed stadium with a retractable roof in Japan. Fukuoka Dome is located adjacent to a giant hotel provided with a 4000-seat hall.

Fukuoka Tower

At 234 meters tall, it is the tallest coastal tower in Japan. Two observation rooms locate, at a height of 116 and 123 meter, offer breathtaking views. The city of Fukuoka is reflected in the 8,000 two-way mirrors that cover the exterior. The tower is lit up with the form of the Milky Way from July to August, and with that of a Christmas tree in December.

Marizon

Fukuoka City Museum

Using the latest audio and visual technology, the museum introduces the history and life of Fukuoka and Hakata, Japan's window to the world. The museum features a reading room, an experimental learning room, and lecture rooms in addition to the regular and special exhibition rooms. The Gold Seal, a designated national treasure, can be found in the regular exhibition room. The Gold Seal was unearthed on Shikanoshima Island in 1784.

Hirao House, a mountain villa

Residence of Motoni Nomura who is poet at the end of shogunate and is loyalism sect. She retired on this place with the husband, and learnt the Japanese poem. Shinsaku Takasugi stayed this place for a while through the good offices of Senzo Tsukigata, when he escaped from Cho-shu domain.

Yusentei Garden

Tsugutaka kuroda, the 6th feudal lord of Fukuoka, built this villa as his second home. The garden is constructed in such a way that it surrounds the fountain and the tea ceremony room, creating a relaxing atmosphere for visitors.

Nokonoshima Island

Nokonoshima Island, in Hakata Bay, is a fun place to visit all year around. Visitors can enjoy the seasonal flowers, as well as swim and camp at Nokonoshima Island Park on the north side of the island.

Imazu Fortifications Against the Mongolian Invasion

This approximately 20 kilometer-long fortifications along the shores of Hakata Bay was made by the Kamakura Shogun in preparation for a second Mongolian invasion. At present, some parts of the fortress are open to the public in Nishijin,Ikinomatsubara, and Imazu.
